Week 8: Mindfulness Reflection
This reflection is based on the mindfulness video and its discussion on fixed and growth mindsets. The responses provided demonstrate original thought, appropriate grammar, and integration of learning concepts into nursing education and practice. Two examples from the video are incorporated to support the analysis.
Reflection Questions
Tom discusses the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
Do you consider yourself someone who functions with a fixed or growth mindset?
I view myself as an individual who primarily functions with a growth mindset. While genetic and environmental influences may shape how we initially perceive challenges, I believe strongly in the ability to adapt, learn, and improve over time. A fixed mindset often convinces individuals that skills are predetermined and unchangeable. However, from personal experience, embracing a growth mindset has allowed me to overcome difficulties, expand my knowledge, and build resilience.
For instance, the video highlighted that individuals with a fixed mindset often avoid new challenges because they fear failure, whereas those with a growth mindset view failure as an opportunity for improvement. I resonate with this perspective because, in my academic journey, I have learned to see mistakes not as barriers but as stepping stones toward mastery. Another example from the video described how growth-oriented learners tend to persist longer when faced with obstacles. This persistence is essential in nursing, where perseverance and adaptability are critical for safe and effective patient care.
Do you think it will be easier to progress in nursing school and practice with a fixed mindset, a growth mindset, or a combination of both? Why?
It will undoubtedly be easier to progress in nursing school and professional practice with a growth mindset. Nursing education is rigorous, requiring continuous learning, adaptation, and resilience in the face of academic and clinical challenges. As emphasized in the video, individuals with a fixed mindset often avoid difficult tasks for fear of failure, which can limit professional development and the ability to handle complex patient care situations.
By contrast, adopting a growth mindset promotes problem-solving, creativity, and resilience. In clinical practice, every patient presents unique challenges, and rigid thinking could prevent nurses from exploring innovative care strategies. A growth mindset allows nurses to adapt to unexpected scenarios, reflect on errors without fear of judgment, and continuously seek improvement. This mindset not only benefits personal success but also enhances patient safety and quality of care.
The following table compares the impact of fixed and growth mindsets in nursing school and practice:
| Aspect | Fixed Mindset | Growth Mindset |
|---|---|---|
| Approach to Challenges | Avoids difficult tasks to minimize risk of failure. | Views challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. |
| Response to Feedback | May feel criticized and discouraged by constructive feedback. | Welcomes feedback as guidance for improvement. |
| Persistence | Gives up quickly when faced with setbacks. | Demonstrates perseverance and resilience during obstacles. |
| Application in Nursing | Struggles with adapting to new clinical situations or complex patient needs. | Embraces clinical complexity and adapts strategies for better patient outcomes. |
In summary, while a combination of both mindsets may appear balanced, relying heavily on a growth mindset fosters greater success in nursing school and practice. It ensures adaptability, persistence, and openness to continuous learning, all of which are necessary for providing holistic and patient-centered care.
