Introduction
Poetry
The artistic medium I selected to create is poetry, an expressive form of art that merges narrative and lyricism to convey emotions, insights, and life experiences. Unlike other artistic expressions, poetry allows the writer to communicate through rhythm, metaphor, imagery, and symbolism, creating a unique connection with the audience.
Poetry is versatile; it may appear in structured rhyme schemes, free verse, or prose poetry. Regardless of form, it possesses the ability to inspire joy, evoke sorrow, and spark contemplation. Much like visual art, drama, and dance, poems carry messages and stories that reflect the poet’s intentions and life perspectives.
This art form allows writers to touch on universal human themes such as perseverance, grief, healing, and love. Poetry not only uplifts and consoles but also provokes reflection and initiates change, making it a timeless medium that transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries.
Summary
In essence, poetry holds a significant place in the realm of art due to its ability to encapsulate emotions and lived experiences. Its adaptability across styles and subjects makes it an essential tool for self-expression and interpersonal connection. Through poetry, one can explore both the shared and unique aspects of human life, fostering empathy and understanding among diverse audiences.
Depth of Soul
There are moments when I reflect on my inner self, envisioning the strength and dignity of a queen who carries her crown with grace, even when it threatens to slip. Poetry becomes a mirror through which I express my resilience, offering glimpses of gold—words of comfort and encouragement—to others who may feel disconnected or unseen.
Although I may not possess a literal kingdom, my poetry allows me to extend love, hope, and belonging to others. Through sacrifice, I aim to ensure no one feels the emptiness of isolation. Yet, this dedication is not without challenges. Time and emotional struggles sometimes overwhelm me, threatening my sense of balance.
Despite these challenges, poetry allows me to process my emotions—both light and dark—and share them authentically. Small gestures of connection, such as a phone call, a written note, or even a warm embrace, remind me of the resilience within and the transformative power of love.
The Courage of Love
One of the most inspiring poems that influenced my creative process is “Before I…” by Aniya K. Pantanal (2017). The central theme of this poem emphasizes that self-love and the pursuit of personal dreams require courage rather than perfection. This resonates deeply with individuals facing modern challenges such as depression and anxiety, where resilience becomes crucial for survival and growth.
Witnessing close friends endure grief, loss, and financial burdens inspired me to write my own poem titled “I’m All It Takes.” My piece reflects the perspective of someone struggling with depression but reminds them of their inherent worth and inner strength.
Question: What inspired your poem?
Answer: The inspiration came from a personal connection with an individual who felt lost in their struggles with depression. Although our contact was intermittent, the depth of their experiences and feelings of diminished self-worth motivated me to write a poem that reminded them—and others—of their value and resilience.
Challenges Imposed by the World on Individual Spirit
The central connection between “Before I…” and my poem lies in their exploration of the individual spirit amid adversity. Both works examine how external pressures and internal struggles can obscure one’s sense of worth. However, the two poems diverge in their focus and delivery.
| Aspect | “Before I…” by Aniya K. Pantanal | “I’m All It Takes” (My Poem) |
|---|---|---|
| Theme | Emphasizes resilience and courage to overcome struggles. | Highlights small acts of kindness and personal connection in healing. |
| Tone | Encouraging, brief, and concise. | Reflective, descriptive, and deeply emotional. |
| Medium Style | Short, concise verses conveying strength. | Longer sentences and imagery exploring deeper emotional struggles. |
| Message | Encourages self-empowerment despite challenges. | Shows how connection, love, and reminders of worth can uplift someone battling depression. |
While Pantanal’s work stresses the internal resilience needed to rise above life’s trials, my poem underscores the transformative effect of human connection. Together, the two highlight different yet complementary pathways toward overcoming hardship—one through inner courage and the other through external support and compassion.
HUMN 303 Week 5 Assignment: Essay Art Creation (Music/Dance/Poetry)
This assignment highlights the profound capacity of poetry to embody personal reflection and collective meaning. Both the original poem that inspired me and my own creation illustrate how art can respond to human suffering and resilience. Poetry not only communicates the depth of individual struggle but also provides hope, reminding readers that they are not alone in their journey.
