Week 1 Assignment: Journal Critical Thinking
Definition of Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is the deliberate process of evaluating information and situations before responding or taking action. Although it occurs frequently in everyday life, people may not always recognize when they are thinking critically because some responses become habitual or automatic. In such cases, muscle memory may guide decisions without conscious reflection. However, in situations that demand careful analysis, it is crucial to pause, reflect, and make reasoned choices. In the nursing profession, critical thinking is especially vital. For example, when providing patient care, I apply critical thinking by integrating my clinical knowledge, evidence-based research, and physician directives to make informed decisions that optimize patient outcomes. This approach ensures that actions are purposeful rather than reactive, which is fundamental in delivering high-quality healthcare.
Heart of the Matter
Facione and Gittens (2016) identify chapters 12, 13, and 14 of Think Critically as the “heart of the matter” because these chapters synthesize prior concepts and provide a comprehensive understanding of critical thinking. The authors emphasize that even when striving for objectivity, personal beliefs and uncertainties may influence reasoning. These chapters focus on two key elements: inference and explanation. Inference involves drawing logical conclusions based on available evidence, while explanation pertains to understanding the reasoning behind those conclusions. Recognizing the connection between inference and explanation allows for more accurate and reasoned judgments. For instance, if a favorite television show is unexpectedly canceled, knowing the rationale behind the decision helps one understand and accept it, rather than reacting solely based on emotion.
Challenges and Insights
One of the challenges I anticipate this semester is keeping up with weekly reading assignments, as I often prefer visual learning tools, such as slides, over traditional textbooks. Additionally, completing an online course requires adjusting to independent learning without the benefit of in-person instruction. Despite these challenges, the initial chapters have highlighted the importance of taking time to thoroughly assess situations before forming conclusions. Personally, I sometimes react quickly, particularly with family members, likely because I feel more comfortable expressing my emotions with them. Learning to pause and consider situations critically will enhance my ability to make thoughtful decisions. Professionally, these lessons reinforce patience, careful analysis, and improved judgment, all of which are essential qualities in nursing practice.

Table Version
| Section | Description | Example/Reflection |
|---|---|---|
| Definition of Critical Thinking | Critical thinking is the practice of carefully analyzing information before making a decision, a skill that is crucial in professional settings, particularly in nursing, to provide safe and effective care. | In nursing, I apply critical thinking by combining my knowledge, current research, and physician orders to make informed decisions that improve patient outcomes. |
| Heart of the Matter | Chapters 12-14 of Think Critically (Facione & Gittens, 2016) are considered central because they integrate earlier concepts and examine contrasting thought processes, highlighting the importance of inference and explanation. | Understanding how to draw valid conclusions (inference) and explain the reasoning behind decisions (explanation) strengthens my ability to make logical and well-supported judgments in both personal and professional contexts. |
| Challenges and Insights | A major challenge this semester is staying on top of the reading assignments. Early chapters emphasize the importance of deliberate reflection to understand situations fully. | I sometimes respond impulsively, especially with family, but learning to carefully analyze situations encourages patience, thoughtfulness, and better decision-making. |
