Week 2 Clinical Reflection

This week’s clinical experience provided a meaningful opportunity to engage with a patient who presented with multiple health concerns. The patient had a history of atrial fibrillation, which influenced her cardiac rhythm and complicated her recovery after surgery. While she had not previously required oxygen therapy, she became oxygen-dependent following her procedure. This situation highlighted the complex and unpredictable ways in which comorbidities can affect patient outcomes. It reinforced the importance of vigilant post-operative monitoring to identify secondary complications early and intervene promptly.

Another valuable aspect of this week was the guidance I received from my assigned nurse. She was supportive and intentional in creating teaching opportunities, allowing me to shadow her in multiple care scenarios. With her supervision, I gained hands-on practice in patient care activities such as bathing, discharging, and transferring patients. Additionally, I assisted in medication administration, where I learned about the safety protocols for pulling and verifying medications. One of the more advanced skills I practiced was setting up a patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump. During this process, I recognized the importance of collaboration and accountability, particularly the requirement of a second nurse to cosign and validate medication doses. These experiences deepened my understanding of safe clinical practices and the teamwork required in nursing care.

NR 325 Week 2 Clinical Reflection

The most meaningful highlight of the week was the development of a trusting relationship with one of my patients. Entering the clinical setting, I was initially apprehensive about patient communication and worried about my ability to build rapport. However, through consistent interaction and support, I noticed growth in my confidence and ability to engage meaningfully with patients.

This week, I also had the opportunity to perform fundamental tasks such as measuring vital signs and conducting a head-to-toe assessment. While these skills had seemed daunting during classroom or online practice, applying them in the clinical setting felt more natural and fluid. This transition from theory to practice emphasized the difference between academic preparation and real-world application. By the end of the week, I felt more assured in my ability to contribute effectively to patient care and support the healthcare team. Looking ahead, I am motivated to refine my clinical skills further, expand my knowledge base, and explore more advanced aspects of nursing practice.
