Overview
The investigation into the provision of end-of-life quality care holds potential to streamline the planning process for cancer patients, thereby alleviating burdens on both patients and their families. This inquiry aims to explore whether in-depth discussions regarding end-of-life planning should initiate at the point of diagnosis or if patients undergoing ICU care or innovative chemotherapy regimens prior to death align with their preferences. Through this research, our institution endeavors to optimize care for these patients while respecting their end-of-life preferences.
Key Study Components
Data Collection Plan:
This study will focus on a specific demographic—individuals aged 18 and above diagnosed with cancer. The data collection phase is anticipated to span two to three weeks, ensuring comprehensive and accurate data retrieval. Essential information will be obtained by scrutinizing Electronic Health Records (EHRs) sourced from local medical facilities and our clinic.
Data Security Plan:
Adherence to stringent confidentiality measures is paramount. All personnel involved in this research will undergo specialized training and formally acknowledge their commitment to upholding confidentiality, security, and privacy standards. Furthermore, consent will be obtained from patients and/or their authorized representatives before accessing their medical records.
Benchmarking Plan:
A comparative analysis will be conducted, aligning three quality metrics specified in the National Quality Framework (NQF) with data extracted from local healthcare facilities and our clinic. Leveraging electronic Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) will facilitate seamless interoperability of patient records, thereby enhancing the overall quality of care.
Quality and Change Management Strategies:
Robust quality management strategies, including peer review and tracer methodology, will be implemented to ensure the reliability and accuracy of our findings. Only peer-reviewed journal articles authored by accredited healthcare professionals will be considered in this study. Tracer methodology will gauge compliance with standards related to the quality of care for individual cancer patients.
Conclusion
This investigation promises invaluable insights into end-of-life care practices for our cancer patients. It will underscore the importance of initiating discussions about end-of-life decisions early in the cancer diagnosis process to reduce the likelihood of intensive end-of-life care and promote peaceful home-based transitions. Moreover, it will ascertain whether intensive care aligns with the preferences of patients nearing the end of life. Additionally, this study will enable us to evaluate the appropriateness of hospice and palliative care for patients experiencing declining health and incorporate these options into their end-of-life plans.
