MAKING HEALTHCARE FAIR

Unlike many developed nations, the U.S.A has not yet accomplished a type of universal health care system to accommodate and provide care for every citizen, leaving many neglected and forced into a lower quality of life. Research shows that, compared to other high-income countries, the U.S spends nearly twice as much on healthcare, yet has the worst outcome and the highest numbers in terms of cases of chronic diseases (Tikkanen & Abrams, 2019). The purpose of this paper is to bring awareness to this topic and to open discussion on the ways and reasons to change this reality. This debate is important to consider as it brings into question the Hippocratic Oath that professionals of the healthcare system are required to take as a pledge of loyalty and commitment.

Healthcare managers, especially, should invest time into bettering this issue as they are the ones who set the example to be followed by the other employees of the organization. In the United States, there is an evident increase in the aging population and overall demographic growth, which means that healthcare leaders should be prepared to develop a system capable of providing for this growing population in order to guarantee a positive quality of life for all as the demand for high-performance and cost-efficient health care organizations grows (Buchbinder, Shanks, & Kite, 2021).

IMPORTANCE OF PROBLEM

The lack of universal healthcare directly impacts healthcare organizations as they are not able to attend to everyone’s needs and provide preventative consultations, therefore leaving them unable to better the overall health of the entire population. This increases the cases of chronic illnesses that the country will have to face as the population ages, other than also creating the risk of proliferating disease across the country, a hazard to public health and well-being. By not addressing and attempting to solve such issues immediately, the number of issues will accumulate, leading to an overwhelmed healthcare system in the future (Tikkanen & Abrams, 2019).

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

One of the most effective solutions, although seemingly unviable in terms of financial balance, would be to invest financially in creating a functioning universal healthcare system to provide basic medical service to all. This would, in the long-term, be extremely cost-efficient as it would lead to a healthier nation, which is much less burdensome economically. Another would be to strategically develop a way to combine and leverage employee talent and technology to provide the most productive, accessible, and affordable care and treatment for all. Both solutions aim to maximize productivity and cost efficiency while providing the best service for all. The former being the recommended option as it is the most economically sustainable, is guaranteed to show the best result in the long-term and it would highly benefit patients as well and employees of health care organizations and the organizations themselves in a professional point of view. Affordable healthcare may enable earlier intervention to prevent chronic diseases, improve the overall public health of the U.S., and decrease the economic strain associated with an unhealthy low-SES (Wu & Green, 2000).

In conclusion, it would be beneficial for the U.S to invest in making the healthcare system one that is accessible to all as it would not only boost organization and employee morale but also facilitate a healthier life for its citizens through preventative care and consequently raise the quality of life. Healthcare managers and leaders should be qualified and willing to plan accordingly. Furthermore, making the healthcare system more accessible contributes to the overall long-term sustainable development and growth of the organizations and its employees, while addressing the current health crisis.
