Leadership Experience

I lack formal team leadership experience but have held various roles across different industries and business sizes. Once, I was designated as a “shift lead,” but in reality, there wasn’t much leadership required due to the small team size and self-directed nature of the work. Throughout my work experiences, I’ve often found myself under managers and supervisors who failed to inspire their teams, leading to apathy among subordinates, including myself. My encounters ranged from managers who were barely present to micromanagers obsessed with control.

One memorable experience involved a manager at a family restaurant who reacted with unjustified anger when I attempted to perform a simple task with a bit of thoughtfulness. This encounter taught me that managers can significantly impact job satisfaction, as evidenced by research from DDI’s Frontline Leader Project, which indicates that a majority of employees have left or considered leaving a company because of their manager.

While lacking formal management experience, I’ve developed “soft skills” associated with leadership through organizing, directing, and leading teams in cooperative video games. These games require adaptability, communication, and strategic thinking—essential qualities for effective leadership in any setting.

Leadership Approach

Gallos (2008) distinguishes between management, which deals with complexity, and leadership, which deals with change. This differentiation resonates with my experience leading teams in multiplayer video games, where adaptability and communication are crucial for success. Before each game, it’s essential to establish clear objectives and strategies, anticipate challenges, and assign roles based on each team member’s strengths and skills.

Similarly, in business, effective leaders foster collaboration by involving team members in decision-making, assigning roles based on strengths, and creating a supportive environment where everyone feels invested in the team’s success. Establishing clear expectations and organizational structures from the outset helps prevent conflicts and ensures alignment towards shared goals.

Leadership Collaboration

Collaboration is integral to successful leadership, as there is no leadership without collaboration. Effective leaders prioritize serving their team and promoting a culture of openness and respect. However, fostering collaboration requires a collective effort from both leaders and team members, and it’s crucial for organizations to promote a positive culture conducive to collaboration.

In conclusion, effective leadership involves adaptability, communication, collaboration, and creating a supportive environment where team members feel valued and motivated. By prioritizing these principles, leaders can inspire their teams to achieve success.
