Present and Future Impact on Hospitals by Aging Population

Hospitals are grappling with numerous challenges exacerbated by the aging population, including capacity issues, nursing shortages, and reimbursement cuts. The Healthy People 2020 initiative underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between communities and healthcare organizations to improve preventive care for older adults (Healthy People.gov, n.d.). With chronic illnesses becoming increasingly prevalent among older individuals, hospitals must focus on strategies to ensure quality care while navigating financial constraints and staffing shortages.

Current and Projected Future Demographic Breakdown of Aging Population

Recommendations to Help Meet Needs

To address the healthcare challenges faced by seniors, implementing home care services, including telehealth and home care assistants, can enhance access and outcomes (VanBooven, 2019). Furthermore, hospitals must prioritize patient-centered care and leverage technology to meet the expectations of the tech-savvy baby boomer generation (Eagle, 2014).
