Introduction

Organizational design plays a critical role in determining the success of an organization. This assessment explores four distinct organizational design structures, examining their similarities and differences, and evaluates how a specific design can contribute to the establishment of a high-performance organization.

Organization Designs

The first organizational design discussed is the functional organization. In functional organizations, employees are grouped into specialized units or departments based on their areas of expertise, such as marketing, human resources, or accounting (UpCounsel, n.d.). These organizations are characterized by a high level of structure, with each department operating independently. For instance, governmental entities comprise individual agencies and departments working autonomously towards common goals (UpCounsel, n.d.).

The matrix organizational structure is the next design under consideration. This structure allows employees to have multiple reporting structures, often combining functional and divisional responsibilities (MindTools Content Team, 2019). An example is Phillips, which implemented a matrix structure in 1970, requiring managers to report to both product division and geographical managers (MindTools Content Team, 2019).

The network structure, a relatively new design, integrates multiple organizations to deliver products or services (SOBIYA, n.d.). Networked organizations frequently outsource essential functions like marketing and sales. For instance, a general contractor may employ construction workers while outsourcing specialized tasks such as flooring and painting (SOBIYA, n.d.).

Lastly, the virtual organization is geographically dispersed, with employees working remotely and communicating primarily through digital means (Symplr, n.d.). Symplr, a healthcare operations company, exemplifies this organizational type by providing remote healthcare solutions to thousands of facilities (Symplr, n.d.).

Organization Design Comparison and Their Challenges

Functional and matrix organizations share a hierarchical leadership system. However, the matrix structure is more intricate, often involving multiple reporting relationships for employees. Network organizations operate with minimal hierarchy, relying on external partners for crucial functions. Virtual organizations may maintain a hierarchical structure, but enforcing it can be challenging due to remote communication methods (MindTools Content Team, 2019).

Large corporations often adopt a hybrid approach incorporating various design types to enhance productivity and adaptability. Smaller organizations may benefit from functional or virtual designs, especially considering easier oversight and reduced overhead costs associated with remote work (MindTools Content Team, 2019).

Organizational Design Choice and High Performance

A virtual organizational design, if implemented effectively and with competent leadership, can lead to high performance, particularly in today’s dynamic environment. Amidst global uncertainties like the COVID-19 pandemic, transitioning to a virtual structure can optimize costs, minimize health risks for employees, and widen the talent pool by enabling recruitment beyond geographical limitations (MindTools Content Team, 2019).

Although the initial cost of restructuring may be daunting, the potential savings from reduced overhead expenses can enhance organizational performance by minimizing liabilities and promoting efficiency (MindTools Content Team, 2019).
