Reflection Questions

What kind of group does Tom discuss that can determine your success or failure?

Tom highlights the concept of reference groups, which significantly influence an individual’s pathway toward success or failure. He explains that the people with whom we interact most frequently shape our behaviors, attitudes, and overall mindset. By surrounding ourselves with supportive, motivated, and positive individuals, we are more likely to cultivate habits that lead to personal and professional growth. Conversely, negative or unmotivated groups can hinder progress and contribute to unhealthy lifestyle choices. This emphasizes the critical role that social networks play in determining long-term outcomes, both academically and professionally.

How many people does he suggest to surround yourself with, and what are the three areas you and your group will experience together?

Tom recommends surrounding yourself with five close individuals. These core connections are influential in three primary areas of life:

Number of PeopleKey Areas of Shared Influence
FiveHealth
 Attitude
 Income

He suggests that these individuals will strongly impact your habits and outlook in each of these domains. For example, if your closest group values physical well-being, you are more likely to adopt healthier routines. Similarly, surrounding yourself with individuals who maintain a positive attitude and are financially responsible can encourage you to mirror these qualities.

Can you identify the “people” you spend the most time with?

Yes, I can clearly identify the individuals I spend the majority of my time with. My immediate support group consists of my family and significant other.

  • Parents: My mother plays a central role in my daily life, offering emotional encouragement and financial assistance when needed. My father, although currently away in Mexico, provides long-term guidance and motivation to pursue academic and career goals.

  • Boyfriend (Felipe): He is a source of calmness and stability, encouraging me to stay grounded during stressful times.

  • Siblings (Juan, Carlos, and Maria): Each sibling contributes differently—whether by offering emotional support, helping with tasks, or simply sharing experiences that strengthen family bonds.

This close-knit group provides the foundation I rely on for encouragement, accountability, and growth. My parents, in particular, have consistently motivated me to continue my education and remain focused on my professional aspirations. Having such a strong support system allows me to maintain balance in my academic, personal, and emotional life.
