Why These Competencies Were Selected

The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies were chosen to provide a structured framework of the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for professional nursing practice. These competencies act as a foundational guide for all nurses completing their pre-licensure education, ensuring that graduates are equipped to deliver safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.

Because health care is constantly evolving with advancements in technology, new treatment protocols, and shifting patient needs, competencies must remain adaptable. Regular review and updates ensure they continue to reflect current expectations of the profession while preparing nurses to respond effectively to complex health care challenges (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, 2014).

Two Most Important Competencies for My Future Practice

Which two competencies are most important for my future practice?

In my future nursing career, leadership and teamwork/collaboration stand out as the two most essential competencies among the ten outlined.

Leadership is particularly important because my long-term professional goal is to pursue advanced education and eventually establish and manage my own health care clinic. Leadership competency equips nurses with the ability to think critically, solve problems effectively, and make informed decisions that improve patient outcomes. It also emphasizes the importance of guiding and empowering others, fostering innovation, and addressing the social, ethical, and organizational factors influencing health care delivery.

Teamwork and collaboration are equally critical since health care is rarely an individual effort. Even the most skilled and knowledgeable nurse relies on interdisciplinary cooperation to achieve the best outcomes for patients. Collaboration promotes mutual trust, open communication, and shared responsibility, all of which enhance patient safety and satisfaction. By working cohesively, health care teams can adapt quickly to changes, reduce medical errors, and continuously support one another’s professional growth (Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, 2014).
