Week 8 Discussion: Your Nursing Destiny
Every career path is shaped by its own professional culture, which reflects the shared values, ethics, and standards of its members. Professional organizations are instrumental in strengthening and sustaining this culture. These organizations not only advocate for their members but also provide platforms for collaboration, continuing education, professional development, and leadership opportunities. In nursing, these associations help nurses remain current with evolving healthcare policies, innovations, and practices, while also fostering a sense of community and belonging (Matthews, 2012).
Professional Nursing Organizations
The history of professional nursing organizations dates back to 1893 with the creation of the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses, which eventually became the National League for Nursing (NLN). Over time, numerous other associations have been established to serve different nursing specialties and roles. Some of the most recognized organizations today include the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Red Cross, Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association, various State Nursing Associations, and the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA).
Currently, I am actively engaged with the NSNA, an organization founded in 1969 to support student nurses. The NSNA provides a wide range of resources such as access to nursing journals, professional development opportunities, and career support tailored to students pursuing different levels of nursing education (Matthews, 2012). My involvement with NSNA has enhanced my learning experience and provided a solid foundation for professional networking.
Current and Future Involvement
Looking forward, I am planning to join the American Nurses Association (ANA). As the largest and one of the most influential nursing organizations in the United States, the ANA has strong national and state-level networks that benefit nurses at all stages of their careers. Membership would not only strengthen my professional credentials but also grant me access to cutting-edge research publications, career resources, and valuable networking events. Additionally, being part of ANA can significantly enhance my employability by showcasing a commitment to professional growth and ethical nursing practice (Matthews, 2012).
Certification Aspirations
In terms of professional certifications, I am considering pursuing two distinct credentials: Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) and Certified Clinical Research Professional (CCRP).
The CRNA certification prepares nurses to provide anesthesia services during medical and surgical procedures. Certification requirements vary by state but are universally regulated by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA). Achieving this certification would place me in a highly specialized role with significant responsibility and autonomy.
The CCRP certification focuses on clinical research and includes roles such as laboratory technologists, clinical scientists, and research coordinators. Eligibility typically requires a degree in nursing, clinical laboratory science, statistics, medical technology, or business administration. Obtaining a graduate-level degree would therefore be essential to qualify for CCRP certification.
Both certifications align with my long-term career vision of advancing my education, gaining specialized skills, and expanding my opportunities in both clinical and research fields.
