The Papez circuit model (Heilman, 2002) posits that critical brain regions such as the fornix, mammillary bodies, anterior thalamic nucleus, cingulate cortex, and hippocampus play pivotal roles in regulating emotion and memory (Jacobson & Marcus, 2008).
The Neural Pathway of the Papez Circuit
Neurology delves into the interactions between the nervous system and the brain. A neural pathway delineates the course through which messages and sensations traverse the nervous system, influencing various behaviors and phenomena (Mumenthaler & Mattle, 2006). Central to the Papez circuit is the hippocampus, nestled deep within the temporal lobe. It coordinates processes such as motivation, emotion, learning, and memory, thus contributing to the function of the limbic system (Sinah Dutta, 2019).
The progression of emotions and sensations within this neural pathway is intricate. External stimuli, such as odors, sights, or sounds, are processed in the thalamus before being relayed to the sensory cortex. Subsequently, the cingulate cortex facilitates the development of feelings, culminating in the crucial involvement of the hippocampus in the storage and formation of memories. Trauma, accidents, or developmental issues can disrupt this process, resulting in memory impairment (Dharani, 2015).
Effects of Papez Circuit Dysfunction
Various factors, including abuse, environmental influences, and genetic predispositions, can disrupt the normal functioning of the Papez circuit, leading to memory deficits and altered behaviors (Kileen, 2020). Lesions along this pathway often manifest as varying degrees of memory loss, with Alzheimer’s disease looming as a potential consequence (Dharani, 2015).
