Reflection on Professional Development
As a postgraduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in sport psychology, I am thrilled to commence an internship with a mentor associated with your esteemed institution. At present, I ascertain that my abilities and enthusiasms align closely with Career Track 3, which accentuates clinical and counseling services tailored to diverse demographics, including athletes (Capella University, n.d.). This trajectory typically necessitates a doctoral degree from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited clinical or counseling psychology program, accompanied by substantial coursework in sport psychology and related fields. Nonetheless, drawing upon my Master’s background, my ambition is to obtain certification as a Mental Performance Consultant through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology and to function as a psychological advisor within a sports medicine facility.
My preparation for this career path encompasses multifaceted aspects, with my current employment being a pivotal component. Presently, I am employed as a flight attendant for a major US airline, involved in charter flights for an NFC East team during the NFL season. I intend to utilize this opportunity to establish mentorship within the player development program, thereby gaining insights into the application of sport psychology in a professional sports environment. The player development program, as facilitated by organizations such as the Washington Redskins, promotes continuous personal and professional growth among players, with an emphasis on lifelong learning and holistic development (Washington Redskins, 2018).

Continuous education holds paramount importance in the ever-evolving domain of sport psychology. Consequently, I plan to attend the upcoming Association for Applied Sport Psychology convention to gain insights into emerging techniques, practices, and to network with industry professionals (Association of Applied Sport Psychology, n.d.). Additionally, I aim to enhance my knowledge through subscriptions to esteemed publications such as the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology and the Journal of Sport Psychology, which disseminate contemporary research and practices within the field (APA Division 47).
Despite not yet possessing licensure or certification, I am mindful of the ethical imperatives that underlie my professional development. The Association of Applied Sport Psychology’s ethical standards, particularly regarding the Boundaries of Competence, underscore the importance of recognizing one’s limitations and seeking appropriate guidance (Whelan, 2011). Furthermore, adherence to ethical guidelines outlined in the American Psychological Association’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct, particularly concerning confidentiality (APA, 2017), remains integral to my ethical framework.
Reflecting on my recent coursework in Performance Enhancement in Sports, I acknowledge the significance of mentorship in comprehending the practical application of sport psychology in optimizing athletic performance. Through mentorship within the NFL club where I am employed, I aspire to witness firsthand the integration of psychological strategies in fostering holistic athlete development.

In conclusion, I am enthusiastic about the opportunity to intern under the guidance of a mentor from your organization, confident that the experience will furnish me with invaluable insights and experiences essential for my professional journey. As I continue to accumulate the necessary knowledge and skills for licensure, I am committed to leveraging every opportunity to advance in my chosen field.
