Major Perspectives of Psychology in Everyday Life
Psychology offers multiple perspectives for understanding human behavior, with five major approaches providing distinct insights: psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, and neuroscientific/biopsychological (Chamberlain, 2019). Each framework helps explain why individuals act in specific ways, offering unique lenses to interpret decisions, motivations, and behaviors in everyday life.
This week, I explored these perspectives and how they can be applied to real-life scenarios. A notable example is the decision made by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2020 to step back as senior members of the Royal Family, dividing their time between the U.K. and North America (Bruner & McCluskey, 2020). Their intention was to become financially independent while continuing to support the monarchy. This announcement generated public debate, with many speculating about the psychological factors influencing their choice.
By applying different psychological perspectives, one can analyze the couple’s decision-making process more comprehensively. For instance, examining the situation through behavioral and cognitive lenses provides insights into how external factors and personal thoughts shaped their actions.
Behavioral Perspective
The behavioral perspective emphasizes the role of external stimuli in shaping behavior. According to behavioral psychologists, individuals are conditioned by their environment to respond in certain ways. In the case of the Sussexes, this approach suggests that their decision to step back from royal duties may have been influenced by persistent external pressures, such as intense media scrutiny and public expectations.
Behavioral psychology posits that actions are learned through interaction with the environment. The Sussexes’ desire for a more private life illustrates behavior shaped by these external conditions. Their choice to reduce public engagement reflects an adaptive response to ongoing stressors and environmental pressures, demonstrating how behavior can be molded by situational influences rather than solely by internal drives.
Cognitive Perspective
In contrast, the cognitive perspective focuses on internal processes such as thoughts, beliefs, and expectations in determining behavior. Cognitive psychologists examine how personal experiences and mental frameworks guide decision-making. For the Sussexes, Meghan Markle’s upbringing outside the royal system may have influenced her expectations regarding privacy and autonomy for her family.
This perspective suggests that their choice to redefine their roles was influenced by their anticipation of a more balanced, independent life. Cognitive psychology highlights that the Sussexes’ decision reflects deliberate planning and evaluation of future outcomes, emphasizing the importance of personal perceptions and mental constructs in shaping human behavior.
Conclusion
The decision by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to step back from royal duties can be interpreted through multiple psychological perspectives. From a behavioral standpoint, their actions respond to environmental stimuli, such as media attention, while the cognitive perspective emphasizes the role of personal thoughts, expectations, and experiences in guiding behavior. This analysis demonstrates how human behavior is shaped by a combination of external pressures and internal cognitive processes, reflecting the complexity of decision-making in real-life contexts.
Table: Psychological Perspectives and the Sussexes’ Decision
| Psychological Perspective | Key Features | Application to the Sussexes’ Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Behavioral Perspective | Behavior is influenced by environmental stimuli and conditioned responses. | The Sussexes’ choice to reduce public engagement may have been shaped by media scrutiny and the desire for personal privacy. |
| Cognitive Perspective | Behavior is guided by thoughts, beliefs, and expectations. | Meghan Markle’s upbringing and desire for independence and privacy influenced their decision to redefine their family’s role. |
| Psychoanalytic Perspective | Behavior is driven by unconscious motives, desires, and internal conflicts. | The couple’s decision may reflect deep emotional needs for autonomy, unresolved family dynamics, or internal conflicts with traditional expectations. |
| Humanistic Perspective | Emphasizes personal growth, self-actualization, and fulfillment. | Their decision could reflect a pursuit of self-fulfillment and authentic living, prioritizing personal values over societal pressures. |
| Neuroscientific/Biopsychological Perspective | Examines the influence of brain activity, genetics, and neurobiology on behavior. | Neurobiological factors, such as stress response and emotional regulation, might have contributed to their decision-making process. |
