Exploring Career Goals and Motivation in the Path to Research Assistance

In my pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a newfound ambition surfaced: the desire to become a research assistant. As I delved deeper into my coursework, my intrigue with research across various assessments intensified, reaching its peak as I approached the end of my program. With just a handful of courses remaining, I delved into exploring the role of a research assistant, focusing on the types of research environments I envisioned, such as university research departments, research centers, or private research organizations. Additionally, I aimed to grasp the core responsibilities of a research assistant, including specific tasks like utilizing diverse computer programs.

One significant hurdle I faced in pursuing this ambition was comprehending data analytics, particularly in the realm of Big Data Analytics. This field encompasses novel algorithms, methodologies, and systems pivotal for large-scale research endeavors. Big Data Analytics transforms daily life by integrating and analyzing heterogeneous and diverse data to inform decision-making processes. Its applications span various domains, including health, policy-making, and innovative educational models like MOOCs and Student-Teacher Modeling (Yang, Cao, & Shao, 2021).

Motivation in the Pursuit of a Research Assistant Career

Psychologists delineate two primary forms of human motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic motivation is fueled by external rewards such as financial gain, success, or recognition, while intrinsic motivation emanates from internal satisfaction, curiosity, or enjoyment of the task at hand (Lopez-Garrido, 2021). My drive to pursue a career as a research assistant is influenced by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors.

Extrinsically, this career path promises higher financial rewards and opportunities for acknowledgment. Conversely, intrinsically, it resonates with my passion for research and curiosity about diverse phenomena. Moreover, attaining this goal would serve as a positive model for my adult children, inspiring them to pursue their academic and professional aspirations.

Personality Traits and Motivation

Research suggests that personality traits significantly impact one’s performance and motivation. For instance, individuals high in extraversion tend to excel in verbal communication, while conscientiousness and agreeableness facilitate effective teamwork (Kelsen & Liang, 2018). Considering my Big Five Personality Traits assessment, which indicates high scores in openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness, alongside a moderate score in neuroticism, I believe these traits equip me to excel as a research assistant. My receptiveness to new ideas, willingness to collaborate, commitment to task completion, and sociability contribute to my intrinsic motivation to pursue this career path.

Self-Determination Theory and Intrinsic Motivation

The self-determination theory posits that individuals become self-determined when their needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy are met. Intrinsic motivation, a cornerstone of this theory, underscores the significance of feeling in control of one’s actions and goals, mastering tasks, and experiencing a sense of belonging (Lopez-Garrido, 2021). Aligned with this theory, my intrinsic motivation towards becoming a research assistant stems from fulfilling these psychological needs, thereby sustaining my pursuit despite challenges.

Conclusion

Understanding the interplay between personality traits, motivation, and psychological theories informs my journey towards becoming a research assistant. By harnessing intrinsic motivation, aligning with the self-determination theory, and leveraging my personality strengths, I am well-positioned to navigate obstacles and contribute effectively to research endeavors.
