Locating Credible Databases and Research

There are several chronic diseases commonly encountered by communities worldwide. Some of these are curable while some are life-threatening and impose a lot of emotional and financial burden on the patients as well as their families. One such disease is Cancer. It is an everyday challenge for healthcare providers to manage patients with various types of Cancers. Some of the types of them are not very well-known and require evidence-based research and practices to plan treatment and care for such patients. The focus of this report is on Breast Cancer in women. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is described as the application of the available scientific data which is referred best for decision-making related to treatment and providing effective care to patients (Li et al., 2019). 

Breast Cancer is the most common malignant disease found in women globally. Annually, 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Furthermore, research has declared breast cancer as the second highest cause of mortality among women in the US (Watkins, 2019). Breast cancers are known to have a poor prognosis because they begin as a local disease and can metastasize within unpredictable time (Łukasiewicz et al., 2021).  Hence the treatment and care are planned on an individual basis keeping in mind evidence-based research practices. 

This article will assist a new staff nurse in successfully planning nursing care for a patient who has been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. This will provide an EBP resource for the nurse to better plan care management strategies for this patient. Furthermore, this report will discuss ideal communication strategies that nurse leaders can use to support the newly trained nurse in researching the diagnosis. Lastly, some reliable and relevant resources will be shared which can be used to create well-organized care plans for the patient with Breast Cancer. 

Communication Strategies 

Communication between nurses is as important as interprofessional communication. The interaction between nurses is significant to establish professional relationships and enhance collaboration. Nurse leaders should create a mutual environment for new nurses so that effective patient outcomes are achieved. Authors state that effective communication between novice and senior nurses is an example of support from senior nurses as well as it helps new nurses in their transition period (Chao et al., 2021). The strategies that should be used for effective communication are:

  1. Active listening – this is another communication strategy that creates professional competency. Actively listening to the concerns of new nurses and then responding to them using prior professional experiences. Prior experiences are learning methods for both senior as well as junior nurses. It helps improve their clinical concepts to effectively provide patient care.
  2. Open communication – open lines of communication build a trustworthy relationship which further improves the learning process between new and fully-trained nurses. This helps novice nurses to effectively research different diagnoses and share their concerns with senior nurses without hesitancy. This enables them to improve their nursing practices by using EBP guidelines (Malatji et al., 2022).

Successful communication and incorporating effective strategies help to promote collaboration among the nursing staff as well as assists in improving their professional competency. Hence quality care is provided and patients’ outcomes are enhanced. An article mentions that improved teamwork and collaboration in healthcare assist patients by decreasing their mortality and morbidity rates hence improving care quality and patients’ safety (Zajac et al., 2021).

One of the critical steps of evidence-based research is finding credible and reliable sources so that the information used to plan the care is authentic. There are various methods to evaluate the credibility of the sources, one of which is the CRAAP test. CRAAP  is an acronym for 

  • Currency (it includes the date of publication. It is considered that the article within 5 years is up-to-date with the information). 
  • Relevance (this describes the relevancy of the article to the topic being researched)
  • Authority (this includes the details about the author and publishing journal)
  • Accuracy (accuracy of the information and the claims are well-supported with the backlinked research)
  • Purpose (this explains the reason behind the research conducted) (Esparrago-Kalidas, 2021). 

The best places to research credible resources are the University’s online library and the hospital’s online educational resources. Educational resources available at the organization are specifically prepared and relevant to the hospital so they are easily accessible and can be applied into practice easily. Moreover, the journals available on databases online (PubMed, BioMed, Google Scholar) are useful as well as they provide authentic information. 

The Five Credible Sources for Effective Research

According to Google Scholar metric, the top best five journals for evidence-based research related to cancers are the Journal of Clinical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Clinical Cancer Research, and Molecular Cancer. 

Why These Five Sources are Best Evidence-based? 

The articles in these journals are reliable as they provide information specific to cancer care, and are mostly written by healthcare professionals. Moreover, they have published in the top five journals as per Google Scholar ranking. These are easily accessible sources that will help new nurses to plan care for their patients with cancer. 

Journal of Clinical Oncology: This journal provides the most credible, and authoritative resources for its readers related to oncology research. It publishes high-quality articles, original reports, reviews, and all work related to the care of cancer patients. 

JAMA Oncology: Journal JAMA Oncology serves its readers with original research and peer-reviewed articles that advance the knowledge of cancer research and improve the clinical care of patients with cancer. JAMA Oncology’s purpose is to meritoriously deliver the conclusions of clinical research, major scientific innovations, applicable discoveries, and contemporary treatment to the oncology community. 

Annals of Oncology: The journal of the European Society for Medical Oncology and the Japanese Society of Medical Oncology publishes proficient peer-review periodicals on state-of-the-art cancer treatments or work related to oncology medicine.

Clinical Cancer Research: This journal publishes articles that are based on innovative and translational research which links clinical labs to clinical practices. The focus of the journal is new treatments and pharmacology research related to the treatment. 

Molecular Cancer: It is an open-access, peer-reviewed journal that attracts quality original research and reviews that highlight important advances in all areas of cancer and related biomedical science.

Conclusion

To conclude, effective communication is beneficial for newly trained nurses to become adapted to the clinical environment, and to learn new information and experiences so that effective care plans are developed for better patient outcomes. Thus, it is fundamental to construct a collaborative atmosphere and discover tools to approach credible resources to improve quality care and provide evidence-based care to healthcare consumers.
