The Applied Organizational and Leadership Concepts course has been essential in deepening my understanding of leadership and organizational behavior within healthcare environments. Through this course, I enhanced my ability to compare and contrast various leadership theories, identify attributes that define successful leaders, and apply practical strategies to strengthen interprofessional communication across healthcare teams.

A central focus of the course was ethical decision-making, which underscored the importance of fairness, transparency, and accountability in leadership roles. Ethical leadership ensures that decisions made within healthcare organizations align with professional values and societal expectations.

Moreover, the course highlighted the benefits of the Magnet® model, emphasizing its contribution to higher staff satisfaction, improved patient outcomes, and overall organizational excellence. The learning experiences reinforced how leadership directly affects nursing practice, patient safety, and healthcare delivery. During this course, two leadership approaches that made a lasting impression were transactional leadership and transformational leadership.

Transactional leadership operates through structured systems of rewards and consequences to maintain compliance and productivity. It is rule-oriented, emphasizing stability and short-term goals. In contrast, transformational leadership focuses on inspiring individuals, fostering creativity, and empowering healthcare teams to exceed expectations (Weberg, 2012).

DNP-prepared nurses often exemplify transformational leadership by guiding teams toward shared goals, motivating staff through vision and example, and cultivating an environment of innovation and professional growth. These characteristics make transformational leadership highly effective in the evolving landscape of healthcare.
