PSYC FPX 3210 Assessment 1 Analyzing Sources Worksheet
In this study, there were seven instructors from six service-learning courses who were invited to participate along with the students in these courses. These courses were offered at a Midwestern State University (Wang & Rodgers, 2006).
What do we know about the generalizability of this study? In the language of researchers, can the results of this study be generalized?
It may be hard to generalize this study to the whole population. The researchers focused mainly on students from these courses who were also characterized by their academic level. This study is focused on that group of individuals, not on students who may be on a different academic level as well.
Find the following article in the library and then use it to answer the following questions:
Sutter, M., & Perrin, P. B. (2016). Discrimination, mental health, and suicidal ideation among LGBTQ people of color. Journal of Counseling Psychology, 63(1), 98–105. https://doiorg.library.capella.edu/10.1037/cou0000126
Read the information in the section Method – Participants. Describe the sample population (who participated) in your own words. Use the correct citation.
The participants in this study were individuals who identify as LGBTQ, were of a racial/ethnic minority background and were at least 18 years of age. The data was collected through an online survey.
Outside of the participants in this survey, who else might the results be true for? In the language of research, who can the results be generalized to?
These results could be generalized to any LGBTQ individual, from racial minority groups or not. This could also be generalized to individuals who are just from minority backgrounds. Many people face discrimination today, whether it is race, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. and the negative impacts that it has, can be generalized to many individuals.
