Interdisciplinary Collaboration: A Case Analysis
Teamwork is essential in any organization. Interdisciplinary collaboration occurs when members from multiple departments work together to address intricate organizational problems (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). In healthcare facilities with excellent interdisciplinary collaboration, problems can be analyzed, solutions developed, and necessary changes made (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). This paper aims to examine situations pertaining to interdisciplinary collaboration within healthcare teams.
Addressing Less-Experienced Nurses
Being a new nurse can be a learning curve. While nursing school prepares nurses to a certain extent, much of the learning happens on the job. A significant aspect of a nurse’s role is to provide patient education, covering various topics such as medication knowledge, infection precautions, and surgical procedures. High-functioning teams empower members by allowing meaningful participation in problem-solving (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020), fostering commitment and ownership (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). Additional education opportunities and collaboration with pharmacy can enhance teaching resources.
Additional Team Members
Pharmacists bring essential medication knowledge to interdisciplinary teams, aiding in developing teaching materials and providing insights into adverse effects. Case managers or social workers can recognize and assist with additional patient needs beyond hospital stays, contributing to optimal outcomes (De Luca et al., 2022).
Conflict Resolution
Immediate and professional resolution of conflicts is crucial for effective teamwork (Rosen et al., 2018). A designated team leader can moderate conflicts, ensuring respectful communication and collaboration (Rosen et al., 2018).
Diversity
Diverse teams benefit from varied experiences and knowledge, enhancing group performance (Mitchell et al., 2015). Inclusivity fosters innovative ideas and perspectives, promoting productive teamwork (Crespo-Fierro, 2023).
Breakdown in Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Nurses play a vital role in patient care, and mutual respect among healthcare professionals is crucial for effective teamwork (Baik & Zierler, 2019). Improved communication during care transitions and daily rounds support collaboration and patient-centered care (Dahlke et al., 2020; Bhatt & Swick, 2017).
Restoring Interdisciplinary Collaboration
Acknowledging nurses’ contributions and addressing disrespectful behavior is essential for restoring collaboration (Baik & Zierler, 2019). Supporting nurses’ professional growth and ensuring a culture of safety fosters improved patient outcomes (Baik & Zierler, 2019).
Conclusion
Interdisciplinary teamwork is essential for enhancing patient outcomes. Valuing teamwork and fostering a culture of safety leads to improved collaborative practice and patient care (Baik & Zierler, 2019).
