10 Common myths about therapy

Use the following questions to help you evaluate the above source of information. Answer the questions and then score each category from 1-10 (1=unreliable, 10=excellent). Add up the score to help you decide whether you should use that source for your coursework.

Currency: The timeliness of the information.

Currency Score

  1. Is the information current enough (in psychology, usually within 5 years)?

Yes, it was written in 2020.

  1. Has the information or website been revised or updated in the past 6 months?

Yes, the website has been updated in 2022 and revisions give more credibility.

  1. Are the links functional?

Yes, the links associated with the article are functional.

10

Relevance: The importance of the information for your needs.

Relevance Score

  1. Does the information relate to your topic or answer your question?

Yes, The website is the top result for the related topic on the internet.

  1. Is the information at an appropriate level (i.e., not too elementary or too advanced for your needs?

The article does a good job of being neither overly simple nor employing vocabulary that does not make it sound simple.

  1. Have you looked at a variety of sources before choosing this one?

When I looked for similar resources online, I found that this one very well summed up the same information. Because of this, I think the article’s findings are credible.

9

Authority: The source of the information

Authority Score

  1. Are you able to determine who is the author and publisher of the information?

The article was written by Bryan E. Robinson, Ph.D., and appeared in Psychology Today.

  1. Can you verify the author or publisher’s credentials as a respected expert on the topics?

The author’s bio states that he is a practicing psychotherapist with a valid license. In addition to being a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, he also holds licenses as a Marriage and Family Therapist and an EMDR Therapist. Besides his 30 factual publications, he has made several news appearances, commenting on a wide range of subjects, on a wide variety of networks. Personally, I trust his word and consider him an authority on the subject.

  1. Does the URL help you determine the source? (.edu; .com; .gov; .org)

Yes! The URL for this article absolutely helped to determine the source of the article and more.

8

Accuracy: The reliability, truthfulness, and correctness of the content.

Accuracy Score

  1. Did the author back up his/her statements with credible evidence and list/link to verifiable sources?

The article’s author did not back up any of his or her claims with supporting documentation. The author does offer suggestions for locating a qualified psychotherapist.

  1. Is the information free of spelling, grammar, or other typographical errors?

Yes, the article is free of spelling, grammar, and errors that I am aware of currently.

  1. Does the language or tone seem unbiased and free of emotion?

Unfortunately, I picked up on the author’s predisposition towards psychotherapy as a whole. His comparisons to televised therapy sessions and client relationships gave the impression that he was expressing his own feelings. That’s why I cannot claim with absolute certainty that the paper was objective and free of bias or emotion.

7

Purpose: The reason the information exists.

Purpose Score

  1. Is the purpose to inform? (And not to sell, entertain, or persuade)

The article’s goal was definitely to enlighten the reader. General information was provided, but the piece relied heavily on the author’s own insights and interpretations. There were some enlightening moments, but overall I found the content to be somewhat broad and superficial, undoubtedly interesting.

  1. Is the information fact? (And not opinion or propaganda)

When responding to the article’s queries, the author shared the informed ideas and opinions he had formed. While he did briefly reference one study, I found that most of what was presented was his own opinion rather than hard data. There’s no way he’s aware of the inner workings of every single psychotherapy session around the globe.

  1. Is the source free of ideological, cultural, religious, institutional, or personal biases?

As you can see, I do not agree that this source lacks any of the aforementioned flaws. The author injects a broad critique of these widespread misconceptions. So far as I can see, the author has introduced his own prejudices and may have even thrown in some ideological and institutional biases, all without providing any supporting evidence beyond his own opinion.

7

Scoring:

  • 45-50 Excellent
  • 40-44 Good
  • 35-39 Average
  • 30-34 Borderline Acceptable (Below 30 Not an acceptable source)

[] scientific research article

[x] editorial/commentary

  1. Briefly, summarize in a paragraph of your own words (paraphrase) what is the primary purpose of the Mainous article.

The article emphasizes the critical need of addressing the spread of false information and the general public’s ignorance of scientific findings in the medical field. The entire population gets deceived by “fake news,” or deliberately misleading content shared online. Giving information in a straightforward and easy-to-grasp fashion is stressed throughout the text. However, disseminating factually sound educational data is essential.

  1. Summarize in a paragraph of your own words what Mainous recommends primary care researchers do when publishing future scientific studies to overcome science denial and claims of “fake news”.
When publishing new findings, primary care researchers are not required to do so with the goal of disputing previously published research by others. They must publish with the goal of educating and enlightening their family and friends. When they do publish anything, they must make sure that it can be read and understood by individuals who do not work in the subject every day. These talks should resemble summaries of your research findings and the main conclusions. You don’t want to produce anything that requires others to truly digest it because it’s lengthy.
  1. What is the in-text citation for this journal article using APA style?
(Mainous, 2018)
  1. What is the reference for this journal article using APA-style?

  1. How much time did it take you to complete this exercise and worksheet? Select one answer.
[ ] About what I planned or expected

[ X ] More time than I planned or expected

[ ] Less time than I planned or expected

  1. If this took more or less time than expected, what changes do you intend to make in your future time management planning? Be specific.

This task took longer than I expected. I will tackle these challenges in a few ways. I spent the most time studying all homework resources. I reread the material to ensure I understood it. Second, I used Capella’s great resources, such as the library and APA formatting aid. Before starting this task, I knew I wanted to allocate time to accessing numerous materials, but now I understand how much time is needed. So I will adjust my time management calculator.
