Name of Concept or Theory:

Social Cognitive Theory

Summarize the Concept/Theory (1-4 sentences):

Social cognitive theory organizes and categorizes information for easy comprehension, emphasizing personal, behavioral, and environmental factors. It posits that individuals develop automatic responses based on internalized belief systems related to factors like race, gender, age, and skin color. Observations and learning from an early age influence preferences, contributing to the formation of stereotypes and, subsequently, prejudice and discrimination (Schunk & DiBenedetto, 2020; McLeod, 2016).

Real World Example:

In instances of Asian prejudice, the automatic association of Chinese individuals with the global pandemic, such as the unfounded belief that they were responsible for COVID-19, exemplifies the social cognitive theory. The theory also applies to the motivation behind discriminatory behaviors, as observed in the case of attributing blame to the Chinese race during the pandemic chaos (Abdullah, 2019; Schunk & DiBenedetto, 2020).

Name of Video:

White Like Me

Brief Summary of the Video (3-4 sentences):

“White Like Me,” a documentary by Tim Wise, explores the historical and contemporary struggles of people of color. Drawing parallels between white privilege and the obliviousness to racial inequalities, Wise discusses key historical events, including the anti-apartheid movement and Barack Obama’s presidency. The documentary advocates for color consciousness over color blindness to promote coexistence and acceptance of all aspects of society (Watson, 2011; Kanopy, n.d.).

Apply the Concept/Theory:

The video aligns with social cognitive theory by depicting historical instances where stereotypes, compartmentalization, and overgeneralization influenced behavior. The theory’s emphasis on individual beliefs shaping choices is evident in the conservative resistance to welfare programs benefiting the black community. Additionally, the motivation behind the concept of Reverse Discrimination can be linked to the explicit privileges afforded to white Americans, as discussed in the documentary (Schunk & DiBenedetto, 2020; What Is Reverse Discrimination?, n.d.).
