Leadership and Collaboration Experience

Three years ago, I commenced my role as a marketing manager at ABC Laboratories Inc.’s Houston branch. This pharmaceutical company, headquartered in New York City, operates 24 branches across the United States. Leading a team of eleven members, we embarked on a project to market a newly developed influenza drug. The project aimed to understand the product, identify the target market, and devise a marketing plan within three months.

Adopting a democratic leadership style, I emphasized collaboration within and outside the marketing team, engaging professionals from various departments such as sales, finance, and research and development. This inclusive approach encouraged team members to actively participate, fostering a sense of ownership and commitment to project objectives. Utilizing both analytical and behavioral decision-making styles, I ensured thorough data analysis while consulting team members to maintain transparency and trust. Although successful, I acknowledge the potential benefit of emphasizing the behavioral style more to streamline decision-making processes. Effective communication, characterized by assertiveness and openness, facilitated clarity and coordination among team members, enhancing overall project efficiency and team morale.

Ethics Experience

As a healthcare executive, ethical considerations are paramount, particularly concerning patient welfare. Referencing the principles outlined in Principles of Biomedical Ethics by Childress and Beauchamp, I navigate ethical dilemmas using the LEADS framework, focusing on personal leadership, stakeholder engagement, results achievement, coalition development, and system transformation.

Recently, faced with an ethical dilemma regarding the affordability of a new influenza drug, I aligned decisions with principles of justice and non-maleficence. Recognizing the disparity in accessibility between low-income and high-income populations, a committee was formed to address the issue. Collaborative efforts led to outsourcing research and development to reduce production costs, enabling equitable distribution of the drug at an affordable price. This resolution, guided by ethical principles and the LEADS framework, ensured patient welfare while maintaining organizational integrity.

Conclusion

Effective leadership necessitates understanding diverse leadership styles, decision-making techniques, and ethical considerations. Fostering collaboration and maintaining ethical integrity are essential for achieving organizational goals while prioritizing stakeholder welfare. By adhering to established ethical frameworks and promoting a culture of collaboration, leaders can set a precedent for ethical decision-making and organizational success.
