Introduction

In today’s dynamic business landscape, companies are scrutinized based on their alignment with corporate mission, vision, and goals. These elements not only act as benchmarks for consumer assessment but also facilitate comparisons among industry peers, enabling the evaluation of strategic objectives and business tactics (Stangis, Smith, & Boston, 2017). Amazon.com, a leading player in eCommerce and cloud computing services, provides a glimpse into its corporate identity on its website, indicating its vision of becoming the most customer-centric, best employer, and safest workplace on Earth, although its mission statement lacks explicitness (Stangis, Smith, & Boston, 2017). Developing clear and identifiable mission and vision statements is imperative for Amazon.com to bolster customer relations, fortify its market position, and translate these statements into internal competitive advantages (Stangis, Smith, & Boston, 2017; Leape et al., 2020).

Importance of Vision and Mission Statements

A well-crafted vision statement serves as a guiding force for strategic decision-making by a company’s leadership, complemented by a finely articulated mission statement that identifies key stakeholders affected by the company’s activities and delineates how the company intends to fulfill its commitments (Ashkenas & Moore, 2022; Stangis, Smith, & Boston, 2017). Although Amazon outlines its corporate principles on its website, it fails to explicitly specify the beneficiaries of its actions.

Recommendations for Improvement

To remedy these deficiencies, Amazon should enrich its website by establishing a dedicated section for the mission and vision statement within the “Who We Are” page, arranged alongside existing content such as leadership principles, company accolades, and corporate positioning (Leape et al., 2020). Hyperlinks can be incorporated to provide access to various company-published resources that showcase programs supporting the corporate mission statement. For the vision statement, a variety of content formats such as videos and narratives summarizing Amazon’s objectives, strategies, and initiatives would align with the company’s short-term and long-term aspirations. An interactive infographic or animated presentation embedded on the webpage would render the presentation of the corporate mission and vision statements captivating and engaging, leveraging Amazon’s technological prowess (Leape et al., 2020).

Ethical Commitment through Code of Business Conduct and Ethics

Despite lacking a formal mission and vision statement, Amazon demonstrates its commitment to ethics through its “Code of Business Conduct and Ethics,” accessible via the company’s Investor Relations page. This document delineates the company’s ethical standards, organizational tenets, and dedication to integrity, transparency, legality, and ethical business practices (Massotte, 2017).

Conclusion

To fortify its market standing and distinguish itself from rivals, Amazon.com must craft distinct mission and vision statements, disseminating them to the public through its website to augment the perceived value of its products and services among customers. Additionally, Amazon’s ethical commitment should be continuously reinforced by updating the components of its code of conduct to adapt and address evolving ethical challenges in the business environment.
