Applying research skills includes gathering information, analyzing it to draw meaningful conclusions, and then presenting it to convey the extracted idea while relating it to the respective topic. The Socratic approach was used to help me identify the healthcare problem. It helped me to critically think about the topic, and assess and analyze “Limited Access to Healthcare” (Makhene, 2019). My interest in this topic was initiated by an incident that occurred in the healthcare setting where the need for telemonitoring and remote healthcare services was required/ demanded by the patient. . As healthcare access is a problematic issue it needs to be addressed through telemonitoring or remote healthcare services.
Recognizing Academic Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles
Authentic resources can be selected from a range of databases. These sources include databases (library) of Capella University and research articles from well-known and renowned journals. For this research, peer-reviewed articles were selected from various research journals published in the timeframe of the last five years. The search terms used for research included “Limited healthcare”, “Restricted healthcare”, “Unavailable Healthcare”, “Remote Healthcare”, “Telemedicine”, “Online healthcare service” etc. The articles were selected based on the relevance to the topic, remote healthcare, and how telemedicine can be used to reduce healthcare disparities on time. Journals that were referred for authentic articles included: the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Health Services Research Managerial Epidemiology, BMC Health Services Research, Health Services Insights, Journal of Hospital Medicine, Journal of Community Health Nursing, and BMC Nursing, etc. NURS FPX 4000 Assessment 2: Applying Research Skills
Accessing Credibility and Relevance of Information Sources
The credibility and Relevance of the resources can be assessed by CRAAP (Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose). This test evaluates the creditability and relevance of the selected resources. The CRAAP test evaluates information as follows:
- Currency: assess whether the articles fall into the last five years category range or not.
- Relevance: assess whether the article contains reliable search terms which provide information regarding the topic.
- Authority: assess whether the authors of the research articles are authentic or not. It assesses the background of the authors, whether they belong to the respective research field such as do they have a medical background (Physician, Nurse, Specialist, MD, Pharmacist, Ph.D., etc.). It also assesses whether the authors have submitted previous articles which have been published and did not face any plagiarism or Copywriting complaints stricks.
- Accuracy: assess whether the information stated in the articles is reliable or not. This aspect assesses the information used in the articles and the evidence related to it. Whether the supporting evidence supports the data or has it been randomly cited regardless of relevance to the topic.
- Purpose: assess whether the author was able to relate the information to a specific goal or outcome that the author wanted to address. It addresses questions such as – why was the source created? Was the author biased? (Hensher et al., 2021).

Another tool for accessing the credibility and reliability of the articles includes the use of the “Journal Impact Factor”. The impact factor is assessed by the number of references/citations in an article by the number of articles published in the last two years of the published article. The answer is the impact factor of the article. An impact factor of nine or 10 is considered to be excellent. This factor tells about the presence of articles that have been used as a citation in articles in the past two years.
The reason for considering the below-mentioned articles is due to the reliability of data/information on the topic. The information matched the ‘limited healthcare services’, ‘telemonitoring services’, ‘remote healthcare’, and ‘how limited healthcare can be addressed through telemonitoring services.
Rationale for Selected Articles
The below-mentioned articles were chosen because they highlight the reasons for the limitation of healthcare services to various people belonging to different situations which made healthcare services unachievable or unavailable leading to healthcare disparities. The articles further proposed the use of telemedicine, telehealth/ e-health, or m-health for the provision of healthcare services to these people. Another reason for the selection of the above-mentioned articles was that the articles belong to credible sources, were relevant to the topic, and fulfilled the requirements of the CRAAP test.

The article highlights the need for the implementation and addition of a telemedicine/ telehealth/ e-health system that will enable people belonging to vulnerable communicates such as desolate rural and urban areas with healthcare facilities. The articles highlight the importance of using services such as telehealth and telemedicine to increase the accessibility of healthcare to people to prevent the progression of diseases. The article further highlights that people who belong to low-income status can not access healthcare services and as technological advancements are increasing, access to the physical healthcare system decreases for such individuals. The article proposes methods to ensure the availability of healthcare resources and services to these individuals through telemedicine. Along with this, the articles propose the provision of wifi services to desolate urban and rural areas along with the provision of one smart device (mobile phone/ tablet) per household to ensure basic access to telemedicine by these low-income individuals.

The article highlights the need to shift healthcare services to a digital system to enable effective communication, care coordination, and follow-up sessions. It also highlights factors such as cost/ expensive healthcare services for the mentally affected and proposes to provide mental health through telemedicine/ e-health system. This will enable the majority of the people to receive effective healthcare services who due to financial constraints or society’s pressure do not access physical healthcare services.

This article focuses on the need for telemedicine or a remote healthcare system due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The article stated that after the advent of COVID-19, healthcare systems have failed to provide quality care to all patients. The healthcare systems have been preoccupied with dealing with Corona patients and restricting access to healthcare services for other patients, and healthcare disparities have increased considerably. To prevent this from happening, the article proposed the use of telehealth or online healthcare services that would aim to provide patients with care coordination and healthcare services to enable patients access to healthcare. This would help to provide remote care and management of critical patients through digital means, thus preventing the deterioration of patients’ health and promoting healthcare.
This article was chosen as it is related to limited healthcare services and proposes access to healthcare services through remote or telemedicine.

The article targets the low-income, underinsured, uninsured, and people with minority adults and families. The article states that the healthcare system is expanding, and people who belong to the above-mentioned class can not access healthcare services, therefore suffer from healthcare disparities. These individuals did not have access to healthcare services, nor patient-centered care and due to financial constraints could not afford healthcare services. The article proposes to counteract the poor access to healthcare services, the increased cost of treatment, and the lack of availability of healthcare resources for these individuals by making healthcare available through telemedicine or telemonitoring services. The articles propose to initiate the availability of telehealth to these people by the use of a hospital-linked telehealth application that can be accessed through the patient’s phone, tablet, or any smart device. Video conferencing will enable the healthcare provider to collaborate with the patient and provide patient-centered healthcare services.
This article was chosen as it provides information about the limitations of healthcare services and the use of telehealth to address the gaps and provide patient-centered healthcare services.
Learning from the Research
The research articles helped me to learn about the physical barriers associated with healthcare disparities in rural areas which created gaps in the availability of healthcare services (Bhatt & Bathija, 2018). Mental healthcare disparities associated with social unacceptability and increased cost of treatment led to a lack of access to healthcare services (Coombs et al., 2021). It also helped me to learn about the lack of availability of healthcare services during COVID-19 to many people, which had led to an uncontrolled progression of diseases as limited physical healthcare was available (Nunez et al., 2021). It also helped me to understand barriers related to healthcare that uninsured people face and are unable to access healthcare services (Toscos et al., 2018). These articles helped me to understand the importance of the provision of telemonitoring services to these destitute people to enable the effective use of healthcare services.
Conclusion
The use of the Socrates Approach helped me in the selection, analysis, and assessment of the data for my chosen topic. The use of the CRAAP test helped me to assess the credibility and reliability of the selected articles which helped me in applying research skills in this assessment. In short, students should be careful while selecting research articles and should carefully use the CRAAP test and Socrates Approach for selecting, analyzing, assessing, conveying, and relating the data to the respective topic.
