Ethical and Policy Factors in Care Coordination

Hello My name is Sameer and I am presenting ethical and policy factors in care coordination.  Ethical considerations are considered extremely important in the healthcare profession. Nurses are advocates of quality of care of patients who need to follow ethical guidelines and conducts to enhance the care coordination. The American Nursing Association (ANA) helps professionals to improve care coordination that helps to impact the nursing outcomes and the consequences of poor care coordination can be negative. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the important and application of ethical codes necessary for nursing professionals to help them choose the best practices (Selekman et al., 2019). The ANA provides more than 8 codes in 2015 for nurses and healthcare professionals to consider social and economic factors and work more passionately to reduce mental illnesses (Watkins & Neubrander, 2022).

How Governmental Policies Affect Coordination of Care

The ethical codes of the state and federal regulations in the United States are created to support and empower healthcare professionals to ensure safe coordination and continuum of care. The healthcare clinics and nursing homes are implementing and benefitting from several governmental policies and ethical codes of conduct such as the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) guidelines. These provisions help nurses to choose and right direction in their professions and control the breach of ethics. Furthermore, scholars have published literature that shows that other several policies of the federal Government have been enacted in the country to enhance the performance of the industry. For hypertension and psychologically ill pateints, the rules make sure that professionals are better able to take the patients out of their depression.

For example, the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) is a great example of such a policy that allows nurses to follow policy guidelines and reduce the number of readmissions of pateints of hypertension (Dickison et al., 2019). The psychological ward is becoming overcrowded with patients who can be treated well with the help of following rules provided by the HRRP (Selekman et al., 2019). For example, with this policy provision and ethical standard, nurses are better able to understand the role of motivating other nurses and administrators in our healthcare organization that helps them to empower everyone including hypertension patients. This allows nurses to play a crucial and positive role in emotionally healing the patients and also reduce admissions and re-admissions. This will ultimately help the community to work better and solve problems of healthcare with resources and the best ethical attitudes. Here, I would also like to state the importance of US governmentā€™s role to promote tee coordination and continuum of care by helping professionals to improve the cost reduction goals of the organizations.

National, State, or Local Policy Provisions that Raise Ethical Dilemmas

Ethical dilemmas are a big phenomenon in the world of healthcare. The state board, national, and local policy provisions play an indispensable play a vital role give birth to some ethical dilemmas and issues. For instance, the Affordable Care Act of 2010 re-enforces the changes needed in the attitude of professionals in this complex and important industry in order to better safeguard the personal and sensitive data of the patients (Mason et al., 2020). This ensures that the professionals are not breaking rules of security, confidentiality, and safety and are always following the privacy and security rules (Lasater et al., 2021). However, the rules of the ACA rules can bring some uncomfortable moments and promote complications. This complication related to neglecting the values, cultures, and beliefs of people belonging to different cultures. For example, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States and some religiously devoted patients are not able to gain benefits from the governmentā€™s insurance schemes such as Medicare. This is because their religious beliefs are against the benefits of the insurance in the healthcare industry. The government through Medicare helps thousands of American citizens to improve their healthcare expenses and achieve the best medical facilities. This is one hurdle that should be faced by the professionals and the people.

A vital ethical dilemma also relates to the incorporation of the rules provided by the HRRP. These regulations suggest that healthcare professionals can communicate effectively for better coordination of care and continuum with professionals and executives. The researchers like Gigli et al. (2019) examined some ethical dilemmas about this HRRP because this rule creates misunderstandings in the minds of some people. It can confuse nurses for ensuring the quick and correct diagnosis to depression patients; these mentally ill patients in organizations and emergency wards are often given a new diagnosis by a doctor that is junior. This can increase their length of stay LOS and also raise their costs of care. Therefore, it is important to enhance the continuum of care of nurses and interpret the ethical rules and regulation correctly to save them from misunderstandings.

Impact of Code of Ethics of Nurses on the Coordination and Continuum of Care

The role of strong collaboration and communication in any healthcare organization can be pivotal in terms of revenue generation and performance enhancement. Researchers believe that collaborative healthcare techniques and policies in the nursing homes and hospitals can help the professionals to ensure holistic care of depressed pateints (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021). There are no universal screening methods available in the organization. The planning of multidisciplinary care solutions is challenging always without communication and strong collaborative approaches and models used. There are several pillars of effective collaborative care including patient-centred care. Nurses can focus more on the population-based care models and use technology to enhance communication and monitor conditions of hypertension pateints.  Moreover, the ethics play a great role in enhancing the coordination and continuum of care. The hospital has modern facilities and follows the state board and nursing ethical guidelines to improve the care of coordination and continuum of services. Hence, the organizationā€™s focus is on nursesā€™ improvement via education and training to help them follow the ethical standards and rules to gain sustainable competitive advantage.

Moreover, the application of ethics codes is also advocated by the study of Dickinson t al. (2019) who states that the autonomy principle is vital in the organizations to help nurses deal with ethical dilemmas to improve the condition of mental health patients. The knowledge of autonomy allows and empowers nurses in charge to make ether correct decisions and ethical choices to foster positive collaboration and communication. The concept of justice is similarly described by the study of Abendstern et al. (2019) by stating that nurses are able to work in a biased-free environment if they do not use prejudice in their environment and treat all mentally depressed patients equally.

Moreover, the researchers have also considered the social determinants of health because no two patients of hypertension of dementia are born the same way. Socioeconomic status, religion, culture, place, and education differs for patients. This means that each patient has different social support network that allows them to recover early from the substance abuse or depression. Here, the non- malfeasance factor allows secure mental health services to these pateints to feel safer in healthcare environments and reduce anti-social behaviors. This also allows nursing professionals to build faith in patients through strong and deeper communication.

Conclusion

The government of the United States has issued ethical codes and principles for helping the patients nowadays to improve the role of nurses to enhance coordination of care and continuum. The collaboration of nurses can be positive with patient and their families by following ethical cedes and standards; while the government policies can also help to impact the care coordination through state board and national polices and guidelines. May healthcare insurance plans can lessen the expenditures of patients and ca also HRRP to facilitate nurses to foster the continuum of care also by helping them understanding the ethical dilemmas.
