Hello, I am Vynetta, and in this collaboration and leadership reflection video I will be discussing an important concern in the Vila health system (VHS). In VHS, patients’ safety was seriously compromised during the difficult installation and implementation of Healthix, a modern electronic health record (EHR) system. Whole EHR implementations face several obstacles, some of which are beginning to be overcome with the help of artificial intelligence methods from the field of computer science. In this video, I will reflect on an interdisciplinary collaboration experiences that I have come across and its impact on achieving the desired outcomes. I will discuss best possible leadership practices that will enhance the multidisciplinary team’s performance. Best collaboration among interdisciplinary teams’ strategies will also be discussed.

Reflection on an Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experience

My perspective on the value of multidisciplinary teamwork has been shaped in part by my experience providing extensive care to the elderly population. It’s difficult and complex to deal with an ageing population. In the long term, participation in a diverse partnership was crucial to attaining the intended results. Each member of the team served a specific function. The strategy made sure that there wasn’t any or very little disagreement while the institution was providing care to the elderly population (Olotu et al., 2019). As a result of our mutual regard and understanding, the team members did not meddle with any stated roles related to EHR. Each task’s effect on the patients was something we were aware of. The project’s success also depended on the team’s skill combination.

Diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, hearing impairment, cataracts, and anxiety are just a few of the illnesses that the ageing population might develop. Each member of the team has to have a unique set of talents in this situation. The achievement of the targeted goals was also aided by the early formation of a clear vision. We agreed about implementation of new electronic health record system which can be important for achieving objectives. Our team had serious communication challenges. The members were from various ethnic backgrounds. The communication barriers made it difficult for us to converse. Individuals who did not speak the common tongue felt excluded. They therefore made a negligible contribution to the group. It would be wise to create strategies for enhancing group communication going forward because it promotes productive teamwork (Kiwanuka et al., 2019).

The Importance of Reflective Nursing

The majority of nurses are technologically literate, and they prefer electronic health records to traditional ones. But in Vila’s healthcare system, vital information isn’t being input, patients’ prescription regimens are getting thrown off, and care for patients is slipping as a result of the care staff’s difficulties using Healthix (Vila Health, n.d.). Nurses held the opinion that having access to the records hurt nursing practice by hindering critical thinking, decreasing interdisciplinary cooperation, and taking a considerable amount of time away from it. They believed that even while electronic medical data made it possible for them to provide safe care, the level of treatment also declined (Dunn Lopez et al., 2021).

Poor Collaboration and Inefficient Management

In Vila health, there was poor collaboration in the implementation of the EHR because of a lack of communication and not enough training of the staff on the new software, Healthix (Vila Health, n.d.). Collaborative practice may suffer when there are problems with authority differences as well as a lack of understanding of each other’s roles and responsibilities during patient care. Collaboration is important when various professions work together because it helps to get the desired outcome (Dilles et al., 2021). The existing situation had several gaps, which contributed to the failure of the data collection system that was put in place.

Issues in workplace conditions have been connected to collaboration problems. The exact job distinction and the professionals’ accountability to the leading physician were two collaboration variables that helped to achieve the intended outcome (Kaur et al., 2018). It is important to emphasize that a team can find a solution to the problem of job prioritizing since nurses cannot skip taking care of patients while attending group meetings. In particular, the IT manager was upset with the lack of people and inadequate software knowledge to address every problem. The scenario’s nurses had a much more difficult time; some even had to back chart since the system had failed, while others were angry because they had to delay themselves in order to assist others. If you spend the time to clarify it to me, I’ll be much more on board. For example, Lisa Cotrone, R.N. stated (Vila Health, n.d.). Another example of inefficient management of human and financial resources is that in Vila health, it is mandatory for nurses to buy Healthix to retain the costs down at the organization (Vila Health, n.d.). Keeping the costs down is very useful for the organization, but proper collaboration should be made with the skilled healthcare professionals in order to better implement the technology to get the desired healthcare outcomes.

Best-practice Leadership Strategies to Improve the Achievement of Goals

It takes a strong leader to guide the team through the implementation of Electronic health record in a company and to assess and analyses efforts made to meet objectives. There were many instances of poor collaboration and situations in the Vila Health system. Acknowledging a leader and collaborating well with him are important. For instance, “The path maker/path follower difference implies that managers must be concerned with building stable systems, guaranteeing quality, and discovering and executing best practices.” Leaders must be concerned with innovative ideas, bringing about constructive change, and attempting to push the envelope (Lamb et al., 2018). Many executives were upset because the EHR system was “dropped” on them and they believed they had expressed as much in the EHR based on financial concerns.

In order to ensure that the team is interested, inspired, and rewarded in many ways, the leader must make sure that an atmosphere is in place that is appropriate for EHR operation. Due to this substantial change, the multidisciplinary teams would continue practicing as they met diverse challenges. The collaboration’s management must ensure that the team remains on purpose throughout their work by keeping a clear understanding of their objectives (Magrum & Weber, 2018). This might be achieved by having outstanding communication with the staff, getting their views on the system in use, giving them feedback right away, taking chances with individuals, consistently looking for new talent, and building relationships rather than just rivalry. Team motivation is a crucial component in order to improve the atmosphere for achieving the goals. Supporting team members’ ideas also contributes to a better working environment. The nurse’s ideas must be given top consideration in the current situation in order to enhance the system as a whole and eventually help achieve the goal of better EHR application (Tkachenko & Ardichvili, 2020).

Best-Practice Interdisciplinary Collaboration Strategies

I think the new EHR would have worked better if the team had used a learning the business from all levels approach. This would make the implementation of cause and effect more clear. Spending time with front-line workers and middle level management to best understand the problems they encounter on a daily basis can help business executives be more able to enhance the system for both them and their patients (Young Entrepreneur Council, 2018). This approach would have allowed different segments of the healthcare institution to learn about Healthix gradually and get an understanding of the program’s benefits.

Collaboration and Leadership Reflection

Multidisciplinary cooperation can enhance performance while using EHR as a whole in the areas that will aid in achieving the desired goals. Some components that can help to improve these abilities include:

  1. The Leaders’ Credibility: To lead with character, one must be sincere, reliable, a truthful. Integrity-driven leaders not only speak the truth but also make sure it works. Instead of denying their mistakes, accusing others, or coming up with an explanation, they admit they made a mistake. Among the parties involved, including the employees, a leader should encourage clarity (Turner, 2018).
  2. Enhancements to Skills: The whole working day is devoted to skill development in a diverse team. Through your work and the knowledge of your team, you will constantly have the opportunity to learn new skills and refine your abilities. As a result, an expert must always be ready to take and opportunity (DeCorby-Watson et al., 2018).
  3. Effective Communication: Effective communication and teamwork enable the creation of significant results. In order to clear up any misconceptions between executives and employees, HR’s functions are therefore expanded. If nurses are given a secure environment in which to work, they will effectively collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team, leading to the creation of new rules for the system and the removal of barriers (Bercht & Wijermans, 2019).
  4. Encourage Individual Strength: Highlight each person’s unique skills and how they complement not just the responsibilities of their individual function but also the collective efforts of the team as a unit (Agius, 2019).

Conclusion

To summarize, Vila Health should have evaluated the strengths of their employees before implementing the new technology and should have used the learning company from all levels method, which would have allowed the requirements of the staff to be satisfied, including the executives’ perspectives. The usefulness of information regarding EHR deployment and proper use will undoubtedly be a crucial factor in EHR’s evolution. As healthcare providers, there should be a search for a solution that best matches their operational requirements.
